U.S. passport photo requirements
The U.S. Department of State recommends using a professional photo service to make sure your photo meets every requirement. Our photos are:
- In color, printed on photo-quality paper
- 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head measuring 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from chin to top of head
- Taken within the last 6 months so they reflect your current appearance
- Taken against a plain white or off-white background
- Full face, looking directly at the camera, with a neutral expression and both eyes open
Tips for your photo
- Wear the clothes you normally wear every day. No uniforms.
- For best results, avoid white clothes
- No hats or head coverings, unless you wear them daily for religious or medical reasons.
- Remove your glasses. They’re no longer allowed in U.S. passport photos.
- Headphones and wireless earbuds aren’t allowed.
Final acceptance of any passport photo is always at the discretion of the U.S. passport agency.
